Why Should I Invest in Piano Lessons for My Child?
What does learning piano do for my child?
There as so many benefits! Here are a FEW!
- It increases focus, concentration, discipline, patience and delayed gratification.
- It is good for their mental health; it is an emotional outlet that provides stress release and reduces anxiety, which in turn reduces depression.
- It boosts their confidence to master a skill. Studies show children who take piano lessons for 3 years or more have higher self esteem.
- It is good for the brain. Playing a musical instrument uses all centers of the brain in a way that no other activity can. It improves kinesthetic and tactile learning and increases hand-eye coordination. A 2013 study in Barcelona, Spain, found that a group of participants who were assigned piano practice showed greater neuro and psychological improvement the group who did sports, painting, and other activities. It increases reasoning and comparison skills during practice.
- It provides a form of entertainment alternate to "screen time."
- It improves listening, math, language and reading skills. A study conducted by Martin F. Gardiner at the Center for the Study of Human Development at Brown University found that specialized musical training raised second graders’ math skills well above that of their peers. Reading music is like learning to read another language, (also many terms are Italian) and therefore improves ability to read a foreign language. Music theory is based on math. A 1993 study in the Educational Psychology journal found that pitch discrimination, which is an ability learned when playing piano, is linked to good reading performance. Also, music memorization for a performance exercises reading comprehension skills and increases recall in the brain.
- It opens the door for musical careers as performers, music educators, and/or church musicians, to name a few!
